Water well systems rely on their pipes to keep the system running smoothly by transporting the water underground from the well supply to the home or business. When there is an issue with one of the pipes it can mess up the whole system and cause several problems with your water well system. It is important to be aware of the signs of a broken or leaking pipe and what might be causing it.

There are a few main signs that there is something wrong with one of your water lines. A big wet spot in the ground is one major sign that a pipe is leaking. When there is a hole or crack in the water line, the water will seep out and accumulate around the area of the break. Inside the water line the pressure gauge is pushing the water to move in one direction, but when there is a break in that water line there is more pressure pushing the water up and outside.  Once there is a break in the pipe, this can lead to a mini “water fountain” or geyser squirting from the ground. This is a clear sign that the water line needs to be repaired as soon as possible. The other main sign indicating there is something wrong is your utility bill. When there is a leak in the water line, there is less water moving further along the pipes.  This will cause your pump to run more often than normal to get you water, which increases your bill. It is important to be aware of what is going on around your well because catching a water line break early will reduce the damage that could be done.

Other than leaking, there are a number of reasons why your water line could need a repair. Water lines can often become clogged with rust, iron, mineral deposits or debris to the point where there needs to be repair or replacement. When the water line becomes clogged and the diameter of the pipe is decreasing, the pressure of the water decreases as well. When this happens, you will experience low water pressure and, again, a high utility bill. Water lines freezing or sweating is also a concern when making sure your water well system is preforming correctly. When a water line is frozen, it can lead to a few other problems, such as the pipe bursting. This is something that should be repaired as soon as possible to reduce the chance of further damages. When a water line is sweating, it means that the water inside the pipe is colder than the air outside the pipe. This causes the pipes to experience condensation and they will become wet on the outside, which can lead to the pipes rusting. When pipes are rusty, they can experience erosion and start to deteriorate, which can lead to serious leakage.

Repairing water lines from a water well system is not challenging if the problem is caught in time. Water well systems contain water lines that are trenched underground so you don’t have noticeable pipes running into your home. When a water line needs to be repaired the trench will need to be dug up in order to see the full extent of the problem and then it can be recovered when the problem is fixed. When needing a water line repaired it is smart to call a licensed water well contractor to ensure that the cause of the problem is known and the pipe is properly fixed.
